Post digging and setting methods Woodlyn, PA

In the quaint community of Woodlyn, PA, nestled within Delaware County's verdant landscapes, the art and craft of post digging and setting are essential skills for homeowners and professionals alike. This meticulous process ensures that fences, decks, mailboxes, and other structures stand securely anchored in the earth.

The initial stage requires careful planning; deciding on the precise location for each post is paramount. It’s not just about marking spots haphazardly; one must avoid underground utilities while optimizing alignment with property boundaries. Once these parameters are established, the act of digging can commence.

A variety of tools come into play here: from manual spades to power augers -- each chosen based on soil composition and personal preference. In Woodlyn's loamy soils, a clamshell digger might be sufficient for creating holes with adequate depth – generally two feet or even deeper, depending on post height requirements and frost lines to prevent upheaval during winter freezes.

Next comes gravel placement at each hole's base. This layer aids in drainage and provides a solid foundation preventing wood rot due to moisture accumulation. The posts are then carefully set into their respective pits. Precision is key; they must be level both vertically (plumb) and horizontally (aligned with other posts).

With posts positioned correctly, concrete is often poured around them to establish an unyielding bond between timber and terra firma – though this method may vary among Woodlyn residents who prefer alternative approaches like tamped earth or specialized anchors that eschew concrete entirely.

Despite these variances in technique, one constant remains: all posts must cure or settle before any significant weight or strain is applied. Patience during this phase prevents premature failure of the entire structure – be it a charming picket fence enclosing a backyard garden or a robust support beam for a new deck overlooking Ridley Creek.

Indeed, in Woodlyn as elsewhere across Pennsylvania’s diverse townships, mastering post digging and setting methods represents more than mere utilitarian task; it embodies practical wisdom passed down through generations – ensuring that what rises from the ground will endure through seasons yet unwritten.

Angi provided me with several contractors, I received estimates but chose Philz Landscaping (even after coming in higher) because he satisfied with his estimate and start date our fervent desire to complete the project before winter set in. Alex, Javier set the example of professionalism in setting up the area to remove fencing and gate, installed vinyl fence with double gate (assisted by Carlos), removed all debris, left my yard spotless and we are extremely satisfied with the new fence and gate. Questions we had were answered (Helena, Phil) promptly and Alex, Javier went above and beyond ensuring my wife’s concerns were taken care of; I want again to Thank the team at Philz Landscaping and recommend highly to perform your project.

Had Phil and his workers come by my house to work on the backyard in May this year. Eliminate weeds, regrade soil and replant grass seed. 158 feet worth of backyard which he estimated $1600 to do. There was a hiccup with his office and scheduling and he wasn't even aware of the set date in mid-May. He rescheduled for the week after and took off $100 for inconvenience. His crew shows up and does the job and weeks after, grass grew....but not fully in corners of the yard. I called him back, voicemail immediately. Got in touch with his office and they said they would pass the message. His response times are atrocious and I told him about the patches in the grass. He says "no problem I'll send guys to evaluate and re-seed". They show up and do the job again. By mid-July, weeds are growing in very strong and grass is dying at exceedingly high rate despite me watering. I called him back and he says "that's odd, I'll come by this afternoon or tomorrow" in September when I finally get a hold of him. He never shows up or responds to texts or further calls. The photos below are post-lawn work with visible patches and weeds. I had to spend additional monies on top soil, grass seed and water to correct the loss of 50% of the lawn!! If you want an overpriced job not done right, Phil is your guy!!

Philz Landscaping built 2 patios on my property. One is flagstone and the other is pavers with a retaining wall. Both are absolutely beautiful. Working with Phil and his team has been a great experience. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for reliability, quality, and reasonable pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Woodlyn, PA, the typical recommendation is to dig fence post holes at least 24 to 36 inches deep. This depth provides stability and accounts for frost line considerations to prevent heaving during freeze-thaw cycles.
Fence posts should be treated with a wood preservative that repels water, resists decay, and prevents termite infestation. Using pressure-treated lumber specifically rated for ground contact can significantly extend the life of wooden fence posts in Woodlyn, PA.
Yes, its imperative to check with the local building department or municipal code enforcement office in Woodlyn, PA for specific requirements regarding fence height, setback from property lines, utility clearances, and any permits required before starting your project.
The preferred concrete setting method involves pouring dry concrete mix into the hole around the post and then adding water. This allows for better control over moisture content and reduces the risk of premature cracking. The concrete should then be sloped away from the post to enable proper water runoff. Always follow instructions on the concrete mix bag for best results.
